Whether you’re planning for two or twenty, your comprehensive local’s guide to planning an intimate Leavenworth wedding day.

You’re not “JUST” Eloping in Leavenworth

and Im not “just” sharing local’s secrets…

Leavenworth is more than a postcard-perfect mountain town. Nestled in the eastern foothills of Washington’s Cascade Range, this quirky Bavarian village draws you in with its charm. What actually makes it unforgettable though is everything just beyond the town limits. Alpine lakes. Golden larches in fall. Blooming balsam root in spring. Rushing rivers. Still mornings with coffee on your cabin porch while deer cross the meadow. And of course, the frosted pines and hushed silence of winter in the mountains.

A Leavenworth elopement truly delivers when it comes to creating an elopement day that feels entirely your own. Whether your version of perfect means summiting a peak, floating the river, or saying vows under the stars, a Leavenworth, Washington opens the door to all of it. And it’s beautiful in every season, depending on the vibe you’re after.

Why Leavenworth, WA means more to me than beautiful mountains

What started as childhood summers on the shores of Lake Wenatchee turned into snowy winters wandering the Christmas-lit streets. My grandma used to call our cabin trips her “special treat.” She’s no longer with us, but the tradition stuck. Leavenworth has held my family’s memories for decades, and it’s where my partner and I planned our own winter elopement.

Every time I come back, I find something new. That’s the best part of this place: some things never change, while others constantly evolve. I make it a goal to experience something fresh with each visit, always collecting moments to share with the couples I have the honor of working with. That rhythm of old and new is what makes Leavenworth so special.

And if you’re considering planning your Leavenworth wedding day, let me show you why it’s one of the most unforgettable places to elope in the Pacific Northwest.

WhERE Is Leavenworth, WA and how do you get there?

The closest major airport to Leavenworth is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA). From there, you’ll most certainly need a car. Leavenworth is about a 2.5-hour drive through the Cascades. Before that sounds exhausting, let me share some good news. What this drive lacks in speed, it makes up for in beauty.

You can reach Leavenworth via two major mountain routes:

  • Highway 2 (via Stevens Pass)

    • Stop at the infamous Espresso Chalet for coffee and waterfall views, or step back in time at the 59er Diner

  • I-90 + Highway 97 (via Snoqualmie and Blewett Passes)

    • Grab a beer at Dru Bru on Snoqualmie Pass or a coffee at The Rock near Blewett Pass to Break up the drive

Both are scenic, in just about every season. If travel conditions allow for it, take one route there and the alternate route back to get the full experience.

Speaking of travel conditions… If you’re traveling during snowy months, check in with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT). These mountain passes can close intermittently for avalanche control or heavy snow. If you’re flying into the area between November and March, plan to rent a car with all wheel drive and you will likely need to ask for chains (WSDOT requires even drivers with all wheel drive vehicles to carry chains in winter).

Insider Tip: Taking the Amtrak train to Leavenworth is an option, but plan ahead

You can also take the Amtrak train from King Street Station in Seattle to Icicle Station in Leavenworth. There’s one train daily, and it drops you just a few minutes outside town. However, Leavenworth’s public transportation is extremely limited—and rental cars aren’t available in town, so plan accordingly if you go this route.

Why you should plan a Leavenworth elopement

If you’re dreaming of an intimate wedding day that balances mountain adventure with cozy connection, Leavenworth is one of the few places that delivers both. You’ve got jaw-dropping alpine views, rushing rivers, wildflower meadows, and forests that feel like something out of a fairytale… all within 15 minutes of good coffee and a delicious meal.

It’s one of the rare destinations where you can go from saying your vows on a trail at sunrise to cheers-ing with cider by a fireplace that night.

Want moody fog? You’ve got it. Golden larches? Yep. Snow-covered pines, blooming wildflowers, star-filled skies? All of it. And the best part? Most of these locations are easily accessible—no need for 10-mile hikes unless you want them. However… if you’re prepared to put in some miles on the trail (whether by foot, or 4x4… I’ve got more adventurous ideas just sitting in my back pocket waiting for you).

Whether you’re planning a “just-us” day or bringing a handful of your favorite people, Leavenworth makes it feel intentional, relaxed, and impossibly beautiful.

When to elope in Leavenworth

Anytime is a good time to elope in Leavenworth. Despite Washington’s rainy reputation, the eastern side of the state sits in a rain shadow. That means Leavenworth sees approximately 300 days of sunshine each year. Every season offers slightly different adventures, none greater than the other…

Let’s break down each season:

  • SPRING ELOPEMENTS IN LEAVENWORTH:

No matter where you are in Washington, Spring is an incredibly unpredictable time of year. The weather can range from snow flurries to a mild sunny and 75 degrees. We’ve seen it all. It is certainly the one season you can count on rain showers. If you’re looking to explore the surrounding alpine lakes during your elopement, Spring is not your season. While snow in the town will melt around March, it will stick around until mid-June - early July in the mountains.

Don’t write spring off just yet though. Once late April and early May roll around, Icicle Ridge comes alive with just about every wildflower imaginable. The hills become blanketed in yellow. It’s a sight you just can’t miss.

  • SUMMER ELOPEMENTS IN LEAVENWORTH:

Summer is the top tier season for the laidback or more adventurous elopement. Being situated in eastern Washington means you can count on sunshine and temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The melting snow in the mountain has unveiled this gorgeous alpine lake region. Plan a hike, horseback ride, go zip-lining and then beat the heat one of the nearby lakes and rivers. Looking to float the river? I know a few perfect spots you can drop in. If you’re in town, the line outside Whistlepunk Ice Cream Co. is worth the wait.

In late summer, the dry nature of this region makes it prone to wildfires. I always help couples develop a plan A, B, and C for this reason.

  • FALL ELOPEMENTS IN LEAVENWORTH:

Forget Oktoberfest—“Larch Madness” is the real show. In early October, the mountains around Leavenworth light up with golden larches, drawing leaf-peepers and hikers from all over. You don’t need a backpacking Enchantments permit to experience fall in its full glory. Some of the best spots are just a short hike or a mild 4x4 drive away—forest service roads that lead to quiet ridgelines, hidden groves, and wide open views. Down in the valley (queue Head & the Heart), mid-October brings bright aspens, colorful maples, and slow, golden mornings. The kind where you sip something warm on the porch and actually feel time stretch a little. While the nights are crisp, days often stay in the 60s and 70s… as a lifelong Washingtonian, that’s DREAM temperatures.

  • WINTER ELOPEMENTS IN LEAVENWORTH:

Come December, Leavenworth turns into a literal snow globe. The entire downtown transforms into one of the most magical Christmas towns in the U.S. The lights stay on through February, but the holiday crowds peak in December. Unless you’re traveling for the festival, I actually high advise not traveling here in December.

For snow and more solitude, plan for January or February. Winter in Leavenworth is packed with activities: skiing, snowboarding, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, snowshoeing… and yes, you can even visit Santa’s reindeer.

Leavenworth elopement activity ideas

There’s no single way to elope in Leavenworth, which is pretty much the best part. With every season comes a whole new set of possibilities. And there’s always a balance: something wild and adventurous, or laid-back and deeply connected. You name the vibe for your day, and let Leavenworth do the rest.

Your elopement is so much more than just a ceremony. You have the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind experience—something that feels like the two of you, and no one else. This is your whole day, not just the vows. What do you want it to feel like when you look back?

Honestly? You might only want to spend one day in town and spend the rest of your trip exploring what’s just beyond it.

Need a little inspiration? Start here:

If You Want to Be Out in Nature

  • Hike to a scenic overlook (I’ve got both short + remote options)

  • Paddleboard, kayak, or float the river

  • Camp under the stars (or just hang by a firepit)

  • 4x4 adventure through the mountains

  • Visit a fire lookout

  • Go agate hunting or rock climbing

If You’re Planning a Winter Elopement

  • Snowshoe or cross-country ski to your ceremony spot

  • Go skiing or snowboarding at Stevens Pass

  • Book a snowmobile tour

  • Take a sleigh ride (yes, seriously—with bells and blankets)

If You Want to Add a Little Western Romance

  • Visit the local reindeer farm

  • Take a carriage ride through downtown

If You’re Keeping It Chill

  • Explore local breweries or wineries

  • Visit downtown shops and grab a bite

  • Take a forest service road to a secluded picnic spot

  • Watch the sunrise or stargaze without ever leaving the porch

And if you need vendors or help planning? I’ve got names up my sleeve. I’ll help you bring your vision to life—whether that’s a wild backcountry day or a cozy, connection-filled weekend.

Where to elope in Leavenworth

(And what kind of adventure each spot offers)

Leavenworth has no shortage of beautiful places to say your vows—some just a few steps from downtown, others tucked deep into the hills beyond cell service. And in this region, the deeper you're willing to go (whether that means hitting a trail or bouncing down a forest road), the more you’ll discover.

That said, you don’t have to trek miles to find magic—there are plenty of spots with easy access, including scenic overlooks, riverside parks, and cozy cabin backyards.

Want that chill mountain-town vibe without the hiking boots? Planning for a few guests? A small local venue might be the better fit for you.

Here’s how I break the area down, based on what kind of experience you’re after:

Stevens Pass + Lake Wenatchee Region

Big mountain views, alpine lakes, and forest roads worth the drive

  • Lake Wenatchee State Park – Easy access. Beautiful year-round. Sunrise here? Unreal.

  • Hidden river beaches nearby – No pins. I could navigate the Wenatchee River with my eyes closed. I’ll help you find them.

  • Lake Valhalla – Moderate hike (~7 miles round trip). Best in mid summer to early fall.

  • Pacific Crest Trail access points – Some of the best ridgelines in the region.

  • Great mix of paved access + mild 4x4 forest roads.

Leavenworth + Icicle Valley

Close to town, full of secret spots + iconic trails

  • Icicle Creek – Meandering trails and quite secluded dispersed camp sites along the river

  • Icicle Ridge Trail – Big views just a short drive from town. Steep in parts, but doable.

  • Blackbird Island – In town, riverside trails. Dog-friendly, accessible, great for guests.

  • Colchuck Lake / The Enchantments – A classic—but very effort-heavy and permit-based.

  • If you’re up for a short hike or dirt road, you’ll be rewarded with views no one else will have in their wedding photos.

Blewett Pass + Beyond

Breathtaking trails, desert-meets-mountain views, and underrated gems

  • Blewett Pass Trails – Great for snowshoeing, secluded forest hikes, and larches

  • Cashmere–Leavenworth backcountry – Rolling hills, golden light, and hardly a soul in sight.

  • Entiat ridge roads – If you’re game for some off-roading, the views go forever.

  • This area doesn’t get as much attention—but it’s full of magic if you know where to look.

The truth? Some of the best spots aren’t on Google Maps.
My favorite spots are the ones I’ve stumbled upon driving down a forest service road on a random Tuesday. I scout year-round and help every couple find the perfect location based on their vibe, season, comfort level, and how far they’re down to wander. Whether that means walking out your cabin door or bouncing down a dusty road to something wild—I’ve got you.

Logistics & Legalities: What to Know Before You Elope in Leavenworth

You don’t have to turn your elopement into a paperwork puzzle. Here’s what you actually need to know when it comes to permits, marriage licenses, and planning a smooth day in the Leavenworth area.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Leavenworth?

Sometimes—but not always. Here’s the general breakdown:

  • Permitting on public lands: Most small elopements on national forest land don’t require a permit up to a certain group size, as long as there’s no major setup. Similar guidelines apply for the city parks in this area. State parks will likely require a permit and need a minimum of 60 days’ notice. No matter your group size, it’s always in your best interest to choose a week day for your elopement.

  • Private property or venues: Venues or vacation rentals that allow ceremonies will require advance booking, and may have guest limits or additional rules.

Already overwhelmed? I’ll help you navigate this based on your location, guest count, and plans.

Can You Bring Guests?

Absolutely. Leavenworth has plenty of spots that are stunning and accessible. If you’re keeping things intimate—say, under 10 guests—you’ll have a lot of flexibility in public spaces.

Larger groups? That’s where booking a private lodge, cabin, or venue really shines. It gives you space to gather, celebrate, and not stress about regulations. (I keep a list of local spots that are perfect for this.)

How to Legally Get Married in Leavenworth

Leavenworth is in Chelan County, but Washington makes things easy—you can get your marriage license from any county in the state. You’ll simply want to return the license to the county office you obtained it from. Here’s how it works:

  1. Apply for your license (Chelan or wherever is easiest)

  2. Wait the 3-day mandatory waiting period

  3. Get married within 60 days

  4. Have two witnesses and an officiant (I can be a witness if I’m your photographer—or connect you with an officiant)

  5. Sign, file, celebrate

Pro tip: Want your ceremony to be purely symbolic? You can do the legal part before or after and save your elopement day for just the two of you.
